Who are the FMSA

Welcome to the official website of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa. The Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa is a Roman Catholic international missionary congregation founded by Teresa Kearney, more commonly known as Mother Kevin or Mama Kevina. As members of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Assisi, we make a life-long commitment. Spirituality, Community and Service are integral to our Gospel way of life.

We currently have members in Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Sudan, America and Ireland. Africa has always been the major focus for our work, but wherever we are, we have a particular concern for the most needy and marginalized members of society.

Having served in Africa since 1903, we have been privileged to work with many local people and communities in helping them build their capacity to develop in ways that honour their dignity and address their needs. Our endeavours have been made possible through the support of Parish communities, individual benefactors and donor agencies

Sr Angella Works with women in need. The POWE Project is creating lasting change in the lives of young women and their communities in Kampala, Uganda. Through a holistic approach that combines practical skills training, health education, and environmental awareness, the project empowers women to become agents of transformation. Young women receive hands-on training in tailoring, hairdressing, baking, and essential financial literacy, which has already improved the economic well-being of several families. These empowered women become role models, inspiring a ripple effect of hope and possibility among other girls in the community. POWE project focuses on Vocational Training: Skills development in tailoring, hairdressing, and baking to boost employability and entrepreneurship. Community Health Education: Promoting essential health practices to enhance the well-being of participants and their families. Environmental Resilience: Teaching sustainable cooking methods and eco-friendly practices to protect and preserve the environment. Financial Empowerment: Offering financial literacy and microfinance training to promote economic independence and informed decision-making. Together, we’re building a future where young women thrive—and lift their communities with them. Help Support Our Work among those who in need

Our Latest News

Mount Oliver Convent – A Home of Prayer, Service, and Legacy Mount Oliver Convent serves as the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa—a place of peace, reflection, and continued mission. For decades, our Sisters have gone out among the poor and the oppressed, striving to be a living sign of hope in their lives. Now, Mount Oliver is home to sixteen of our more elderly, retired, and frail Sisters—women who have dedicated most of their lives to selfless missionary service across Africa. Though no longer in active ministry, their mission continues. With the support of a caring team of lay staff, these Sisters care for one another and dedicate themselves to a life of prayer—especially for the needs of our world and the ongoing work in Africa. Their legacy lives on in the lives they’ve touched and in the mission that continues today. Your support helps us care for these faithful women and sustain the work they began. Please support the Sisters if you can.
